Who We Are…

Experienced Charlottesville Real Estate Attorney

In January of 1990, Bill Tucker started Tucker Griffin Barnes P.C. in Charlottesville, Va. with a long-range vision. He was inspired to create a firm:

  • Where all the attorneys and staff are smart, talented and passionate about their work;
  • Large enough for clients to find the experienced legal help they need to solve their problems;
  • Small enough for clients to always feel welcomed and appreciated;
  • Where attorneys vigorously fight for justice to right a wrong, yet offer compassion and understanding no matter what the outcome;
  • And staffed by attorneys who not only live and work in the community, but also give something back.

Tucker Griffin Barnes P.C. is just that firm!

What sets us apart

Tucker Griffin Barnes is not a traditional law firm. Almost all of our attorneys and staff are women. We understand the challenges clients face in juggling work, family, and community responsibilities. We have numerous family-friendly workplace initiatives that benefit our staff and our clients. Our many contributions to the community demonstrate our commitment to the people who live in Central Virginia.

Tucker Griffin Barnes has created a special environment to help reduce the stress of our working families so they can concentrate on the law. Employees and clients see the difference made by our accommodation of family issues. In fact, our firm was the first recipient of Charlottesville’s Family Friendly Workplace Award. We believe combining these values with the practice of law makes us better attorneys, and inspires us to provide the very best representation.

We will do whatever it takes to meet with you. We offer the typical business hours, 9–5, Monday through Friday, but we also make evening and weekend appointments, meet with clients at the hospital or travel to their home.

We offer very competitive fee structures. We work by the hour, for fixed-fee amounts, and on a contingent basis. Our fee structure is flexible; each client and his/her attorney will decide which one is best. We accept Master Card, VISA, Discover and American Express.

We continue to improve our firm. We pride ourselves on being responsive to our clients’ needs, to industry trends, and to technological advances in the practice of law.

No case is too large or too small for us to evaluate. In fact, some of our most successful cases are those that have been ignored or rejected by other attorneys.

We think it’s important you fully consider the following questions before hiring an attorney. Being ready and prepared helps you and us:

Do I really need a lawyer?

Sometimes it’s an easy decision, such as when you get sued or when you’re arrested or charged with a crime. But keep in mind that people hire lawyers for advice and expertise all of the time, in all kinds of situations. While you may be able to get through a legal problem without hiring a lawyer, you should always remember that the law is never black nor white. It’s knowing the grey area that wins the case. One of the first things to ask yourself in deciding if you should consult an attorney is “What’s at stake?” When your finances or liberties are in serious jeopardy, the obvious answer is to get legal help.

How quickly should I consult with a lawyer?

In many situations, it’s obvious that you need to act fast. But even if you think you have lots of time to consider your alternatives, deadlines sneak up on you and lawyers need time to prepare. So it’s always better to start looking for a lawyer sooner than later. If you’ve been injured in an accident, keep in mind that there are time limits on your right to file a lawsuit.

What am I really trying to achieve?

This is an easy question to answer if you find yourself injured through no fault of your own or charged with a crime. In these cases, your goal is to recover money damages or avoid criminal sanctions. In other situations, your objective may be less clear. You must be realistic about your chances of winning and what your case is worth. If you aren’t sure what your legal rights are, it might be worth your time and expense to retain a lawyer to evaluate your situation and advise you on alternative courses of action.

How should I prepare to meet with a lawyer?

If you’ve decided to meet with an attorney then you’ve accomplished an important first step. Now it’s time to make sure that meeting is as productive as possible and that both you and the attorney can have an honest conversation about your options. Sounds easy, but there are a couple of things you shouldn’t forget:

  1. Make copies of everything you’re going to take with you to the attorney’s office. Keep originals together somewhere safe and put the copies in a large envelope or folder.
  2. Make sure you schedule plenty of time for the meeting. Although there are only so many types of situations an attorney can help you with, the details and complexity of individual cases varies wildly, and you will want to have enough time to thoroughly discuss your problem and options.
  3. Bring with you a written list of questions. Even for those with great memories this is important as there can be a lot to discuss and many people are often nervous when speaking about their problems with an attorney for the first time.
  4. Arrive a little bit early so you can relax and compose your thoughts before the meeting.
  5. Remember that although you have gone to the attorney for help, this is also an audition for them.
